The umbilicus, widely known as the belly button, is the first source of nourishment we get. Upon birth, the umbilical cord is cut to separate us from our birth mother, which results in a scar. This scar is called a navel or belly button.

Pain around your belly button area can be an unusual feeling, it can be a dull type of pain or it can be sharp at times.

The point is to be aware of the different causes of pain around the belly button as some of them could be indicators of a more serious condition.

In order to dismiss any unnecessary health scares, get to know what are the most common causes of pain and discomfort around your belly button, below.

1. Hernia

The abdominal organs, like the stomach, bladder, intestines, and bowels, have weak points. A hernia is when part of an organ is displaced and protrudes through the muscle or tissue wall of the cavity containing it, producing a bulge. The abdomen is one of the most common regions where hernias occur.

According to the Mayo Clinic, kidney stones are small, hard mineral deposits that form inside of the kidneys. It is possible to have kidney stones and not know it since most people won’t be aware of them until they start experiencing symptoms.

3. Appendicitis

Appendicitis affects about one in 15 people in the United States. he classic symptoms of appendicitis are: a dull pain near the navel or upper abdomen that becomes more sharp, loss of appetite, swelling in the abdomen.

4. Pregnancy

Pregnant women experiencing a pain sensation that is tolerable is normal, but if the pain is more severe in nature, you should seek medical attention. Excruciating pain may signal the fetus is in distress.

5. Heavy Workouts

And not just heavy workout, there is also sudden twisting or bending motion, intense stretching, weight lifting or any other strenuous activity. They can all cause pain around belly button.

6. Food Poisoning

If the food was not properly stored or it was stored in unsanitary condition it can lead to food poisoning. If you did suffer from food poisoning, you will likely vomit within the first several hours. You might also experience pain and discomfort in the area around your belly button.

7. Urinary Tract Infections

Caused by bacteria, a urinary tract infection can lead to pain behind your belly button. These are basically bladder infections and aren’t that serious in the beginning. If left untreated, the infection may spread to your kidneys.

8. Side Effects of Medications

If you don’t follow the directions when taking medications, this may produce certain adverse effects. Pain behind belly button is one of those effects. This usually happens when the drug disrupts your digestive function.

9. Crohn’s Disease

Crohn’s causes the inflammation in the lining of the digestive system. Most common symptoms might include diarrhea, mucus, and/or blood in the stool, fatigue and abdominal pain around belly button

10. Surgery
